Abstract

Abstract[Purpose/significance] Exploring the factors of using the time limit dynamic setting launched by WeChatMoments, and provide theoretical and practical suggestions for researchers and practitioners regarding settings on social media platforms, under the context of“time collapse”in social media. [Method/process] We conducted semistructuredinterviews to collect data from 30 respondents, by open coding, axial coding and selective coding, based ongrounded theory. Then, we summarized and analyzed the data to explore what factors influencing individuals’uses ofthe time limit dynamic setting. [Result/conclusion] The results show that historical information factors (e.g., inforamtion sensitivity) on social media impact use motivations (e.g., social motivation), and in turn influence the use of timelimit dynamic setting. Meanwhile, use motivations would affect the use of time limit dynamic setting through benefits ofusing settings (e.g., impression management) and costs of using settings (e.g., selfpresentation barrier). Additionaly, individual factors and situational factors could moderate relevant relationships which we mentioned above.
